Back in 2013 I bought my '07 Hummer H3 after my girlfriend suggested that I move in with her. She live further north and at that time my only car was an '07 Mustang GT. Moving meant a longer commute in heavier snow. There was no way I was doing that in a Mustang. I saw the H3 for sale while I was getting some service done, it looked big and bad ass. I thought, "There's the solution. A big Hummer would get me through any snow Ontario has to dish out, and I can park my Mustang in the winter. So I bought it. I had big dreams with the H3. I was gonna start off-roading, we were gonna camp more, go biking. It was all justified.
Now it's 2017 and I did none of those things. All I did do was drive it to work and twice a year to the States. It certainly lived up the my first assumption that it would do well in the snow. It hardly acknowledges any weather exists at all. It effortlessly climbs through any snowstorm or flooding I encountered. But I never did the cool off-roading or backwoods camping or anything. I just ground away on those expensive tires commuting.
As it aged it of course started having issues, mainly electronic. One day you start it up and there would be an message about some failure, then the next time you start it up it was gone. I dumped an additional $4000 on maintenance and various emission sensor replacements. Then last week I was driving to work and I got a message saying, "STABILITY SYSTEM FAILURE." What the heck is that? I looked online and it said it's a blanket warning that covers many different things. Okay that's enough. With an exhaust leak that I was told could cost anywhere from $300 to $3000, new electronic problems, and big $2000 tires that need replaced I think it might be time to take a serious look at how much this vehicle was costing me.
I grabbed a pen, paper and calculator and was pretty shocked to discover that just in gas the Hummer was costing me $520 CAD a month! Just in gas! That's approximately $67 each time I fill and I was filling twice a week. Pile on insurance and other expenses I was just $200 short of a Ford Focus RS payment.
Imagine a Ford Focus RS as a daily driver rather than an H3. I figure it would at least cut the gas in half. Most of my commute is highway and while the Focus isn't spectacular at fuel economy the H3 is awful. Okay maybe I'm just trying to justify buying a Focus RS but it is better gas mileage than my Hummer H3. It is AWD for snow, and it does come with a set if winter rims and tires along with summer rims and tires.
I've already talked to one Ford dealer that could get me the deal I wanted but only had a Nitro Blue care available and I'd rather have the Stealth Gray. Today I spoke with a different dealer that says he can get me a Stealth Gray Focus RS. If he can give me what I want for my Hummer I could be driving a Focus RS around as a daily driver.
The Hummer was awesome for what it was and I'm probably going to miss it but the expense and the fact that I never used it how it was meant to be used make me feel this is for the best. I'm a speed guy, my brother is the offroad guy.

Cobra's Do Hibernate
This week Ontario already started spreading salt on the roads so that means it's time for the Cobra to go to sleep for the winter. Today it was in the low 60s so it was possibly the last day to do outdoor activities without freezing your ass off. As well as taking down the backyard gazebo and hammock I took the opportunity to put the Cobra into hibernation.
I wanted to get the tires off the ground so they don't get flat spots over the following months. My garage is tiny as hell so jacking up the car high enough to get jack stands under it was some sketchy shit. Eventually I got all four tires off the ground and the car is solid without crushing myself.
Next I hooked up a trickle charger. Normally with my previous cars I would just disconnect the battery for the winter but then you have a whole procedure you need to go through to reset the idle in the summer and I'd rather not do that with the Cobra. So instead I chose what I hope to be a reliable charger from Canadian tire. Supposedly you connect it and sort of forget it. It's supposed to be intelligent enough to know when to battery needs topped off and when it doesn't so it only does what it needed. The idea of that makes me nervous though. I don't really want to leave it unattended for weeks in the garage. So I got it all ready but I'm not going to plug it in for a week or two. Maybe I'll even just let it run for a bit instead of connecting the charger and only use it when I return to the States for the holidays.
Lastly I put the cover on. I've never had one before but it came with the car so I might as well use it. I'm not sure if it's weather proof or not but it's in the garage so I'm sure it will be fine. Over all it kind of sucks to have to put it away but when everyone is sliding around and cars are caked with salt in the following months I'll be glad it's safe and covered in the garage. Usually it'll stay there until late April depending on the weather.
Now my attention turns to the Hummer. It's been acting really damn strange lately and I have some serious concerns regarding it getting me through the winter. Unlike my Mustang GT I can't really get out the Cobra and drive it of the Hummer was to break down. So I really need the Hummer to be there for me. I was thinking of taking it into the shop Monday to see if they can diagnose the issue. Fingers crossed it won't cost me yet another $2000. I've already dumped $4000 into it this summer getting it ready for winter.

My Drive To Work Has Become More Colorful Lately
Driving to work with the old Hummer. This road is always pretty but it's gotten ridiculously beautiful. The video really doesn't do it justice.

H3 LS Conversion Would Be Nice
The weather is getting colder so the GT500 has been spending more and more time in the garage. Soon it will be put away for the winter and I'll be back to driving the Hummer full time.
Like I said I really like my H3, not just because I feel it looks tough but they don't make them anymore and I always love to own something that is no longer coming out with a bigger and better next generation. I'm on the fence if this would really be worth doing in the future. My 3.7L is super high miles so maybe this winter it will make the choice for me and die. I sure hope not, I'd rather it be voluntary.
So far this summer I have dropped about $4000 into the Hummer. I had to get all new rotors and pads. It has had a seal leak fixed. It has had the thermostat replaced and numerous emissions issues fixed. It also got it's GM recall taken care of so it won't go up in flames.
Things remaining are an exhaust leak that it has had since I got it. Also there is an annoying tinny rattle that happens every time I let up on the gas. It sounds like a loose heat shield but damn if I can find it. It's also getting to be time for a new set up tires but I don't think any of this is happening this year. I think $4000 is enough expense for this year.
I like my H3, I think it looks pretty badass but since I've been driving it more often I find that 3.7L 5-cylinder is a crap engine. It claims to make 242 hp which doesn't sound bad but I can hardly keep up with traffic. Also the 3.7 is pretty notorious for having head issues which the previous owner of my H3 already had replaced once. The LS is a pretty bullet proof engine I hear. I wonder if anyone has attempted an H3 LS conversion? Then you get reliability and more power.
A quick Google search got me this video. This guy went with an LS3 and a "hot" cam which is a bit more than what I was thinking. I don't care about 0-60 times in a Hummer, I just want a bit more power so I can pull onto the highway without stressing. No idea what this conversion costs but just the LS3 crate engine is about $8000 US. So I'm not really sure there is a value there. Once it's all in and all the modifications are made would it really be worth it??

Warning Letter From Ontario
So last week I received a letter from Ontario saying, "If you get another speeding ticket you could lose your license." I thought WHAT?? They listed my tickets and I got one speeding ticket in 2015 and then recently I got one ticket in 2016. So just two tickets and they say I could lose my license??
Technically they said I COULD lose my license. They said each ticket is 3 points, after 9 points I could be asked to attend a review which would cost me $50 (another Ontario money grab) and they could take my license. Then after 15 points I would lose my license without question. So if we sift though all the scare tactics in their letter what they are really saying is that after 5 tickets I will lose my license.
They also reminded me that tickets usually lead to an increase in insurance premiums but I cleverly have removed that problem from the equation by using a US insurance company. Fortunately Canada and the US don't talk. So issues that happen in Canada aren't seen by my US insurance. These keeps me immune to this problem.
Ironically both tickets were while I was driving my Hummer. I had the bright orange Mustang GT, and now the insanely fast Shelby GT500 but I get my speeding tickets in the 5500 lb Hummer with a 5-cylinder. I guess I must just be paying less attention when I'm just commuting to work and back. Plus I keep a radar detector in my fast car which I do use occasionally and I have nothing in the Hummer.
Anyway, each ticket stays on your record for two years so February of next year one will be gone. I really need to locate some place to have some fun with speed without the risk of a ticket. Of course there are tracks but rarely do you get to have the track to yourself. I'd feel much better getting to know my 662 hp monster if there was not risk of hitting others. Wish me luck.

Houston's Flood VS Hummer H1
This modified Hummer H1 seems unaffected by the flooded Houston streets, even when it’s over the hood. Modified by Search & Destroy Tactical Vehicles I was so impressed that I contacted them to see what they can do for an H3. Turns out there isn’t much. The H1 has the diesel engine which can be waterproofed whereas the 3.7L in my H3 isn’t as flexible.
My H3 can of course get some of the cool bits like a snorkel and so forth but I'd be a little concerned that when the water gets high enough that the snorkel would be needed I'd be testing the seals on the doors for sure. Reading the forums I guess the H3 has a great deal of waterproofing right from the factory.
Anyway check out the cool H1 in action on Houston's flooded streets. For more info about Search & Destroy's modified vehicles check out their site. Search & Destroy

2015: My Damn Disappointing Year in Auto Enthusiasm
The 2015 “car season” in Canada is just about over. Unless there are a few miracle warm October days in the works I’d say the my summer car is staying in the garage. Overall this has been a pretty fucked up year for my car enthusiasm on so many levels. From car accidents, car damage and dissatisfaction or maybe we could call it restlessness to keep what is currently in my stable.
It all started with the damn Dodge Hellcat. I really wanted this car and was so high on getting one. The Challenger is beautiful but let’s face it, the car is a heavy pig. However with 707 hp it really doesn’t matter. I ran into some problems with getting one however. One was that I’m a “nowhere man." I am not a resident of Canada and I don’t live in the States so as far as banks are concerned it’s a reject on either side of the border. You need to reside in the place you get a loan from. The other is that the cars were limited production and you just couldn’t find a dealer that could order one. And the final nail in the Hellcat coffin was that my girlfriend was against it. She is not a car enthusiast and does not understand my horsepower addictions. Which is the same issue most men encounter I assume.

In May while driving my Hummer back from the States some damn trucker lost a rubber wheel block off his trailer. It bounced up and smashed my windshield. Even though the driver stopped and gave me his insurance info he later denied everything and his insurance (Lancer Insurance) refused to pay for any damages. My insurance agreed to pursue the case however they said it could raise my rates and we’d have to pay our $500 deductible. A quote to repair all the damage was over $2000 but we found a place that would replace just the windshield for $300 so we went with that and left the insurance out of the picture.

I saw the new 2016 Mustang GT350 as a beacon of possibilities. It could solve so many issues. I could get rid of my current car, it has 520+hp, and it’s going to be a classic so it’s in theory a car that would increase in value and be something I could keep for a long time. However I am faced with the same issues I faced with the Hellcat which was getting a loan and finding a dealer. However things seemed to be coming together though. I found a SVT dealer about 45 minutes from me that has a few tickets left to order a Mustang GT350. It wasn’t the GT350R but I think I could live with that. Then suddenly I got my Canadian residency approved so I could get a loan. Everything was looking good! But then my girlfriend put the brakes on it all. She does not understand why I need a new Mustang when mine runs fine. I say, “Because I want a better track car.” She does not understand why I would want to go to the track and risk crashing my car and getting hurt. Unfortunately saying, “Because it’s fun and exciting" is not a valid reason in her eyes. So now I see I have a serious problem here for any automotive joy in my future.
And now just to rub it all in my face Ford is coming out with a Focus RS that has more horsepower than my Mustang GT. *sigh*
For me the clock is ticking. My Mustang is worth at best $8000 trade in, it's worth less than my Hummer, and is worth even less every year I wait. The clock is ticking on availability of the cars I want, they aren't just sitting out there waiting for me to be ready. I found a dealer with GT350 orders available and all I can do is watch. The clock is also ticking on me. I'm not spring chicken at 46 and I've already been dead once. How many years of fast driving do I really have left?
I’m overwhelmed with frustration over this entire year. So I’m putting the damn Mustang away for the damn Canadian winter and going to try and forget the whole damn thing. Dammit.

UPDATE: Hummer Windshield Fixed. INSANE!
So the Hummer's windshield is repaired. No, not by Lancer Insurance representing the trucking company that smashed it. They refused to pay claiming the rubber wheel block that fell from their truck could have fallen from any truck. Yeah and then their driver pulls over for no reason and gives me his insurance paperwork for no reason. WTF?? How do they get away with this shit??!? So anyway we had a choice to either go through my insurance or just pay for the damn thing.
The estimate from the local auto body was a wallet shattering $2292.62.... for a windshield! Here is how they itemized it...
My deductible was $500 so there was no way I was going to pay $2000+ out of pocket and we certainly didn't want to risk an insurance hike. My girlfriend however suggested going to small time mechanic that she used back when she had problems. I agreed to give them a shot. They claimed they could do it for $300. What?? $2000+ VS $300??? How is that possible? But I thought I'd give it a try. Sure enough I got the Hummer back with a repaired windshield but it ended up costing $320 rather than the $300 they quoted. LOL I gave them $340 with a small tip.
Driving back I was fairly shocked. How could there be a difference of $1972?? What an insane price gouge! I really don't know what to make of it.

Hummer Windshield Smashed by Careless Trucker
UPDATE: RBS Trucking's insurance company Lancer Insurance sent me a letter saying the item that broke my windshield could have fallen off of any vehicle and there was no proof that it was theirs. Ummm other than the driver pulling over and offering me cash to pay for the damages. WTF?!?! So in short they are refusing to pay.
Return to Canada from Iowa I was driving through Illinois on interstate 80 east. I was in the left lane in my Hummer H3 about to overtake a semi pulling a flatbed trailer. Suddenly I see something that looks like a rubber wheel block slide off the trailer and hit the road. It bounces up and smashes into my windshield just on the edge of the frame. I immediately pulled over and the truck kept going. I got out and looked at the damage.

Suddenly I see something that looks like a rubber wheel block slide off the trailer and hit the road. It bounces up and smashes into my windshield just on the edge of the frame. I immediately pulled over and the truck kept going. I got out and looked at the damage.
The upper frame of the windshield is dented and the glass is pulverized into a powder with cracks running all over the glass from the impact location. Two of my roof running lights no longer work and one is shattered. The plastic light mounting support is also smashed and cracked. I realized that if it would have been a few inches lower it would have gone through the windshield and into my face, probably killing me.
I got back in the car and headed down the road to see if I can at least get a license plate number. About a mile down the road I see the truck pulled off on the side of the road. I pulled in front of him and got out to talk to him. I told him something fell off his truck and smashed my windshield and he said, “Oh, really?” I said yeah come and look. He went over and looked at it and said, “I don’t know, I just pulled onto the highway a few miles back.” I said yeah and something wasn't secured. Then he asked, “So how much do you think it would cost to replace your windshield?” I said I don’t have any idea. He replied, “So what do you want to do?” I said do you have insurance? “Oh yeah” and he got the paperwork and I took a photo of it. He denied anything happened but if not then why did he pull off the road and why did he offer me cash to pay for it? He wouldn't give me his name or his driver’s license but as he drove off I took a picture of his plate.
I had no choice but to return to Canada since I knew nobody in Illinois and had no phone service in the States. So calling my or his insurance would have to wait.
According to the insurance paperwork for RBS Express Inc. trucking company their agent was a Robert W. Smith from First Midwest Insurance Consultants. I called him multiple times the next day and he never answered the phone or returned my messages. Sometimes people take the day off so I waited. All the next day also nothing. So we contacted our insurance, Allstate.
According to the guy we spoke to from Allstate this type of accident is considered comprehensive. Sort of along the lines of an "act of God" or not relating as a result of an accident. Like a stone getting thrown from a tire or an item in the road damaging your car. To this I call bullshit. It is totally the result of carelessness. The truck driver drove off without securing his load and it resulted in damage of another person's property and he's lucky it wasn't injury or death. They said they would have someone look at the claim. and they would get back to us.

On an interesting side note notice how the insurance paper the driver handed me has no policy number. Wonder what that is all about. Maybe the guy doesn't really have insurance.

Canadian Tire Was Hoppin' in Newmarket
Went into Canadian Tire today and I see a Hummer H1 with a Mad Max wrap to celebrate the movie release. Might be a little hard to read. Sorry.
Then when I come back out to my car to leave I see this awesome AMC AMX 390 sitting next to me. I really love those AMXs, Always wanted one. Funny thing Some guy was talking to someone on the phone and saying, "I'm standing here checking out this cool Javelin." Pffft, Javelin. :P

Lambo To Be Crushinated
My Hummer H3 has earned the nickname the Crushinator after Futurama Bender's dream girl. Why? Well I have never ran over anything in my driving history. But since I got the Hummer I have crushed a squirrel and an entire Canadian goose. So yesterday when I saw this lambo ahead of me it crossed my mind how easily I could ruin his day. Lucky it didn't happen. No crushination.
